Everyone Deserves Recovery

CEA-HOW is committed to making the program accessible to members with physical, sensory, or cognitive challenges. Recovery knows no barriers.

The principles of CEA-HOW apply to every person struggling with compulsive eating, regardless of physical ability or other challenges. Our fellowship strives to remove barriers so that all who seek recovery can find it.

Virtual & Phone Meetings

Members who cannot attend in-person meetings have full access to the program through phone bridge and Zoom meetings. These meetings count toward all program requirements and are available worldwide.

Meeting Accommodations

If you have specific needs — mobility, hearing, vision, or other — contact the meeting secretary or your local intergroup before attending. Many meetings can arrange accommodations such as accessible venues, large-print materials, or ASL interpretation upon request.

Flexible Communication

Sponsors and sponsees can adapt their communication to fit individual needs. Some members commit food via text or email rather than phone calls. The core principles of daily accountability and step work remain the same — only the format adjusts.

Caregiver & Family Support

Members who rely on caregivers for food preparation can still follow the food plan with their sponsor's guidance. Caregivers are welcome to learn about weighing and measuring. Family members can find more information on our For Families page.

Literature Accessibility

CEA-HOW literature is not yet available in braille, large print, or audio format. If you would benefit from accessible literature formats, please contact the WSO at gso@ceahow.org or call 323.660.4333. The WSO tracks interest in accessible formats to guide future production priorities.

The Big Book (Alcoholics Anonymous) is available in audio and braille through Alcoholics Anonymous World Services.

Sponsoring Members with Special Needs

Sponsoring a member with special needs is a rewarding service that may require some creative adaptation. The WSO has published a guide covering communication strategies, accommodation ideas, and best practices for sponsors working with members who have physical, sensory, or cognitive challenges.

The guide emphasizes patience, flexibility, and the importance of focusing on the spiritual and emotional aspects of recovery — which are universal — rather than on limitations.
